Wielki Buddha Leshan
W prowincji Syczuan, w miejscu gdzie trzy rzeki Min He, Dadu He i Qingyi Jiang spotykają się, powstało miasto Leshan i sławny i znany ze swej wielkości posąg Buddhy. W czasach dynastii Tang /około 700 roku/ rozpoczęto rzeźbienie 71 metrowej postaci siedzącego Buddhy, który spogląda na łączące się trzy rzeki. Jest to największy posąg Buddhy na świecie. Ale nim do tego doszło musiał znaleźć się ktoś, kto taką wizję mógł zrealizować. Był nim mnich Haitong, który przysiągł sobie, by ujarzmić nurty łączących się rzek i rzekomego potwora, będącego powodem licznych utonięć; postanowił wyrzeźbić /wybudować/ wielki posąg Buddhy, bo tylko siła Buddhy mogła się przeciwstawić sile potwora i nurtom trzech łączących się rzek. Haitong nie doczekał zakończenia; zginął podczas pożaru. Dzieło zostało dokończone z woli cesarza dokładnie 90 lat od jego pomysłu. Liczne otwory w rzeźbie były mocowaniem dla konstrukcji, która chroniła rzeźbę przed nadmiernym wysuszaniem i intensywnymi opadami. Wewnątrz rzeźby były specjalne kanały, którymi nawadniano piaskowiec, bo nadmierne wysychanie powodowało szybką erozję skały, z której była wykonana figura siedzącego Buddhy. Dzisiejsze zanieczyszczenia powodują jeszcze intensywniejsze niszczenie skały; do walki z erozją czerwonego piaskowca włączyli się naukowcy z najnowocześniejszą technologią. Ale też widać próby renowacji, do której używa się specjalnych "tynków" tworzonych na miejscu z takich samych skał, by nie odbiegały kolorystycznie od reszty posągu. Wiele takich próbek tego "tynku" można spotkać na innych rzeźbach i elewacjach. Miejsce godne polecenia.
