Samoa jako małe terytorium musiała być zdana na kaprysy wpływowych państw świata. Tak więc o wpływy konkurowali tu Amerykanie, Niemcy, Wielka Brytania i później także Nowa Zelandia. Choć ślady osadnictwa na wyspach datowane są na 1000 lat p.n.e. przez polinezyjczyków z wysp Tonga i odkryte dwukrotnie przez Europejczyków w XVII i XVIII w. po dość bujnej historii na początku XX wieku, suwerennym państwem stały się dopiero w 1962 roku. Jednak wschodnia część archipelagu wysp samoańskich to Samoa Amerykańskie. Takie słowa jak kava, taro, pe'a, malu są na Samoa ważne i znaczenie tych słów jest każdemu odwiedzającemu tłumaczone. Dobrze, że nasze dziewczyny nie wpadły jeszcze na taki pomysł ozdabiania sobie nóg.
